Federal Government’s Investment in Key Technologies

The Federal Government has deliberately promoted the development of key technologies through its funding.

Based on the Quantencomputing Roadmap and Agenda Quantensysteme 2030, the necessary steps for implementing the economic and future package, particularly towards internationally competitive quantum computers, were determined at the beginning of 2021. Since June 2021, a first universal quantum computer – IBM Quantum System One – can be used in Germany.
With the European Partnership for High-Performance Computing (HPC), the new research framework programs for microelectronics and quantum technologies, the Federal Government is increasing its investments in the promotion of key technologies. The Federal Government has updated the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence and proposes various measures to make Germany and Europe a leading AI location. Furthermore, in 2021, the Council for Technological Sovereignty started work to support the Federal Government in strategically shaping its funding policy regarding technological sovereignty. In addition, the Federal Government has promoted the expansion of leadership in key technologies at the European level within the framework of Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI).
